Minnesota Zoo to Conduct Animal Escape Drill with Local Enforcement Agencies Apple Valley, MINN – September 8, 2009: – As part of National Preparedness Month, the Minnesota Zoo will conduct an animal escape drill – the first one in the Zoo’s history practiced with outside enforcement agencies – on Thursday, September 10, at 4:30 p.m. Media is invited to watch a portion of the drill, which is expected to last approximately 1 hour, 15 minutes. The Minnesota Zoo, like other zoos accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) is required to conduct one drill annually for each basic type of emergency (fire, weather/environment, injury to staff/visitor, and animal escape). The Minnesota Zoo goes beyond this minimum requirement and drills its animal escape procedure 2-3 times yearly. It will conduct this extensive drill with the Apple Valley Police and Fire Department, Dakota County Sheriffs, DNR, State Air Patrol, Eagan Police and others. The Minnesota Zoo is located in Apple Valley, just minutes south of Mall of America. For more information, call 952.431.9500 or visit mnzoo.org. The Minnesota Zoo is an accredited member of the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) and an institutional member of the World Association of Zoos and Aquariums (WAZA).
