The Minnesota Zoo is currently home to four bottlenose dolphins: “Big man on campus” Semo, his energetic daughter Spree, and newer arrivals April and daughter Allie. Allie is currently pregnant by Semo and is due in the spring of 2009; keep an eye on our web site for up-to-date information on Allie’s pregnancy and the status of our dolphin show.
Bottlenose dolphins are not an endangered species, but are protected in U.S. waters by the Marine Mammal Protection Act of 1972. While the total number of dolphins living in the wild is not known, we do know that some populations are at risk. Threats include pollution, habitat destruction, accidental catches in fishing gear and nets, and human activities such as boating. Some species of sharks (tiger, dusky and bull sharks) and orcas will occasionally prey upon dolphins, but humans are a greater danger.
Your gift will help us provide the best possible care for our dolphins and for all of the animals at the Minnesota Zoo, while also continuing our conservation efforts both here at home and around the world.
