The Minnesota Zoo’s sea otters, discovered as orphaned pups off the coast of
Alaska, made their public debut with the opening of Russia’s Grizzly Coast in June. Help welcome them to their new home with a sea otter sponsorship!
Sea otters have the densest fur of any animal on earth, which is how they stay
warm in frigid ocean waters (most ocean mammals use blubber instead). But
their amazing fur also has been a handicap—their pelts were prized by fur
traders, and their reliance on clean fur makes them especially vulnerable to oil
spills. At one time, there were as many as 300,000 sea otters, but hunting
reduced the population to 2,000 in the early 1900s. Today scientists believe the
wild population has rebounded to about 100,000.
