During the day, Madagascar hissing cockroaches are tucked away
under loose bark or in tree holes. These flightless, 2-3 inch
long cockroaches emerge after the evening rains to forage for
fungi and fallen fruits.
Hissing is important in the social life of these roaches. Males,
characterized by large armored protrusions on the body, are aggressive
and hiss loudly during territorial battles but opt for a much
softer hiss to court females.
