BURMESE PYTHON

Range and Habitat: Myanmar, Sumatra, Malaya, Borneo.

Habits and Adaptations: Prey killed by constriction. Females lay eggs and incubate them. Deaf and mute, cannot even perceive air vibrations; tongue can function in taste, smell and some loud noises (hearing); heat organ (small slits in lower lip) enables snake to perceive warmth radiation; olfaction best developed sense; moves with most ease in water; can loosen jaw from linkage so joined only by cartilage which aids eating larger prey.

Diet: Requires little more than their own weight in food per year; small mammals of sizes up to that of pigs and small deer, depending on the size of the snake.

Breeding and Maturation: Mates in December and January; female lays 8-100 eggs 2-3 months later. Eggs 3.25-4 inches long, 2-2.25 inches diameter; white to yellow, sticky, need moisture. Sexual maturity in 3 years.
