Gulf Fritillary
Agraulis vanillae

Habitat: Subtropical forest edges, city gardens, canyons, open sunny areas with abundant flowers.

Range: Favors southern states but may stray as far north as Minnesota.

Facts: The Gulf Fritillary prefers to feed on Passionflowers. Its coloring resembles other Fritillary species but this butterfly is actually categorized as a long-wing butterfly, like the Julia. The Gulf Fritillary may be seen flying far out over the water of the Gulf of Mexico.
